Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - Dealing With Aggressive Blackbirds

The Carib Grackle is a member of the Oriole family and is commonly known as simply a โBlackbirdโ. It is also called the Lesser Antillean Grackle, while its Latin Name is Quiscalus lugubris. It is a glossy black bird with a long slender curved black bill. The iris of the eye is yellowish white and the tail is long and keel shaped (โVโ shaped). Females are slightly larger and less glossy while juveniles are dull brown with dark brown eyes. The size of the adult is between 28-34 cm (11-13 in) and the weight is between 74-142 g (2.61-5.01 ounces). This grackle is found throughout the islands of the Lesser Antilles, Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas and Brazil. It is closely related to, but smaller than, the Greater Antillean Grackle (Quiscalus niger) that is found on the islands of the Greater Antilles. It is similar in appearance to the male Shiny Cowbird with the difference being the shape of the bill and the colour of the iris.

The Carib Grackle is common resident of all the countries in its range and is generally observed in groups. It is a noisy bold bird that spends a large amount of time strutting on the ground with its head held high. It is almost omnivorous eating fruits, insects, seeds, frogs, lizards, snails and discarded human food such as bread, beans, french fries and meat. The combination of its boldness and eating habits has resulted in this bird being very common around human habitation and is seen in household gardens, parks, open-air restaurants, shopping mall parking lots etc.

This frequency around humans sometimes results in problems for people. These birds nest in trees, thick shrubbery such as ixora and ledges of houses and their nesting period is from May to November with the heaviest nesting in June and July. The Carib Grackle is a very aggressive bird when nesting and will attack anything, including humans that it believes is too near the nest. Groups of Grackles will band together to attack and fearlessly swoop at the head. They will repeatedly attack until they drive the intruder away and with each successive swoop will get closer and closer to the head. In attacking they use their claws and beak. In some cases they have literally prevented individuals from using their gardens during the nesting period or forced homeowners to run anytime that they venture out of their house.

The solution to the problem is the removal of the nest. Whenever a homeowner sees large quantities of these Grackles gathering in the vicinity of their home during the nesting period, they should immediately begin looking for the location of the nest(s). It should be removed before the birds have an opportunity to lay their eggs. If the nest is removed the birds will move to another location to lay their eggs (hopefully away from the home), eliminating the problem for the homeowner. It may be necessary to remove the nest a second time as they may immediately return to the same spot to rebuild the nest. Be forewarned that any attempt at nest removal will cause these birds to attack even harder. The homeowner should therefore wear head protection such as a construction hard hat, safety goggles for the eyes and long sleeved shirts.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - How Bird Boxes Can Improve Your Garden

Adding bird nesting boxes to the garden can create safe and secure places where a variety of beneficial birds can raise their families. By encouraging an assortment of primarily carnivorous birds to the garden, the gardener can reduce their dependency on less environmentally friendly forms of insect control while still being able to enjoy the bounty from their garden. In addition, attracting birds to the garden has the added benefit of providing hours of educational entertainment for the gardener as they watch the busy and industrious parent birds raise their young.

By encouraging insect-eating birds, such as wrens, sparrows, and nuthatches to the garden, the gardener can be assured of active assistance in insect control. A hungry bird can consume many times its own weight in bugs and insects and if that bird is, in addition, feeding a nest of hungry babies, the greater the effect will be on the insect population. Many of these birds not only eat flying insects but others, such as caterpillars, grasshoppers, and ants, as well.

The type of nesting box depends on the type or types of birds the gardener wishes to welcome to their garden. Care should be given that the right nesting box with the appropriate size entry hole be provided for the specific bird so as to prevent access to the nest by larger birds or other predators. For instance, a nesting box for a blue tit should have an entry hole no larger than 25 mm across; a nesting box for a house sparrow should be no larger than 32 mm across.

Placement of the bird boxesย is another important factor. Care should be made not to place them where they will be exposed to wind, rain, or direct sunlight. The box's distance from the ground is also important and it should be high enough to discourage intrusion by predators. If possible, the gardener should try to recreate the natural habitat of the birds they wish to attract.

Bird boxes are readily available for purchase in stores or on-line. They can also, with a little woodworking know-how and the proper tools, be constructed at home. Plans with specific measurements and lists of required materials are available on-line and in books.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - Unique Birdhouses and Garden Dรยฉcor Birdhouses รขยย After You Buy Them, This Will Help You Place Them Where They Will Do The Most For Your Birds

As decorative as a wood birdhouse is it still needs a level of functionality, one aspect you need to decide on is color. If your garden dรยฉcor birdhouses are strictly decorative birdhouses then you may want to choose a color that will stand out, or compliment your lawnornaments. On the other hand if you want to provide shelter and a safe haven for nesting birds in your area, bright colors are out. You will be doing a great disservice to your tenants because the brighter the wood birdhouse is the more attention it will draw for potential predators. The Beach Bungalow Birdhouse is a blend of earthly colors and as decorative birdhouses go it fits the bill (no pun intended). Once you have chosen your decorative bird houses based on your needs and what type of species you're hoping to attract the next step is placement.

Every species of bird nests in varying types of locations. If you know what kinds of birds you want to attract you should place your decorative birdhouses in areas where those types of birds live. Unique birdhouses placed on a fence post or tree in a wooded area will attract nuthatches and woodpeckers. Where as decorative birdhouses hung in an open field or large backyard with little vegetation would be comfortable for bluebirds, swallows, and certain types of wrens.

Look your chosen location over paying close attention to the surrounding area. Avoid spots that don't provide protective cover, even decorative birdhouses on a post in an open field should have trees within flying distance. And, an area too thickly surrounded by vegetation won't give the birds a clear flight path to and from the wood birdhouses.

Different species of birds require very precise heights in order to feel safe enough to nest, so do some research on the exact height distance requirements before hanging your unique birdhouses. If possible, place your decorative birdhouses near birdfeeders or birdbaths so that the birds will have easy access to food and water, helping them feel more at home in your garden dรยฉcor birdhouses will make them more likely to stay.

Now, after you have hung all your unique birdhouses or decorative birdhouses and you don't see the activity you were expecting, try adding nesting materials close by. Not all birds will use decorative birdhouses but they all search out and gather some form of nesting material. Some of your common natural nest materials include; twigs, bark, leaves, feathers and the like. Man made nesting materials you can find around your home might be: cotton, yarn, strings and my favorite's dryer lint and pet hair. Let's face it, a purpose for dryer lint and pet hair, I love it!รย  A mesh produce bag works well to secure and hang the bundle of material. Try these ideas and you will have a greater chance of seeing occupied and functional decorative birdhouses.

With the vast destruction of natural habitat, it's getting tougher for wild birds to find proper nest sites. Cavity nesting birds are facing stiff competition for nest boxes, so hanging decorative birdhouses that are functional and safe will help them thrive and bring them back to your garden dรยฉcor birdhouses year after year.

Village Weavers are gregarious birds, nesting in large colonies. They select a tree, sometimes quite close to a village, and load the branches with their beautiful suspended nests until the tree looks as if it is growing strange, exotic fruits. Throughout the year, the colony remains faithful to its original building site, and there is much coming and going as the birds forage for the seeds and insects on which they chiefly live.

Unique among weavers is the Social Weaver Philetairus socius. These birds live up to their name by banding together, sometimes in their hundreds, to builds their amazing communal nests.

As soon as a suitable tree has been chosen, the birds set to work. Their united efforts produce a huge thatched roof of grasses and reeds in the branches, under which the weavers have their own individual nests.

After so much effort, the nest is only used once. By the time the next mating season has arrived, the birds have all moved house. The waterproof roof still stands and so does the rest of the 'building' ; the weavers have simply built on a new extension. In time their communal dwelling takes on the appearance of a native hut as, year after year, it increases in size.

Sometimes, however, disaster strikes. The weight of the extensions brings down the tree and the weavers must move on to another, hopefully even stronger, tree.

Our third picture shows yet another kind of weaver, the Golden Weaver Ploceus bojeri, a familiar sight in the villages of East Africa. Not all birds bother to rear their own young and quite a few species deposit their eggs in the nests of another bird, often quite unrelated. The most famous of all these parasites is the cuckoo but, in fact, not all cuckoos behave in the irresponsible manner of the European species; the Northern American species normally rear their own young.

The Dunnock, or Hedge Sparrow, Prunnella modulari, is a common foster parent for the European Cuckoo Cuculus canorus , which will even lay pale blue eggs to match those of the Dunnock. The Cuckoo lays her egg in the nest of a Dunnock, warbler, wagtail or some similar-sized bird (she is over 1 foot (300 mm) long) and removes one of the rightful eggs. Only rarely do the nest-owners notice the change, and incubation proceeds as if nothing had happened. The young Cuckoo normally hatches before the other eggs, and immediately sets about throwing out of the nest any other eggs, and immediately sets about throwing out of the nest any other eggs or youngsters. This is a simple reflex action with is stimulated when any object makes contact with certain parts of the Cuckoo. The young Cuckoo can now receive the undivided attention of its foster parents, and within a very short time will have grown larger than them; it is not uncommon to see the foster parent standing on the Cuckoo's head in order to cram food down its ever-open gullet.
