The Mourning Dove is the most abundant and widely hunted bird in the United States.ย  Morality is high among doves.ย  Mourning Doves are hunted in thirty eight states.ย  More Mourning Doves are killed each year-over twenty million- than any other animal in the country.ย  Although, dove hunting serves no wildlife management purpose, many view the birds as nothing more than live targets.ย  Doves are not over populated.ย  Doves are not a viable human food source.ย  During the hunting season, doves are actually at their lightest body weight for the entire year.ย  Even if shot properly, doves have very little edible flesh on them.ย  Research studies confirm nearly one in three birds are wounded and not retrieved during hunting season.ย  Despite the hunters, the dove remains among the ten most abundant birds in the United States.

Mourning Doves are the traditional bird of peace and a beloved backyard songbird.ย  They sing a song that sounds like coo oooo woo woo woo oooo.ย  They delight millions of birdwatchers or those who lure the gentle birds to their backyard.

Mourning doves are light grey and brown and generally muted in color.ย  Their tail has white outer edges.ย  Male and female birds are similar in appearance with the males slightly larger and more colorful, with a blueish crown and pink chest.ย  In flight, the birdโs wings make a fluttery whistling sound.ย  The Doveโs are considered a medium size, slender bird with a small head and tapered tail.ย  The feet and legs are light red to light purple, with three toes forward and one reversed.

The mourning doves are highly adaptable birds and are found in a wide variety of habitats.ย  They are found in open woodlands and forest areas near fields and grass lands.ย  They are abundant in agricultural and suburban areas where humans have created suitable habitats.

Mourning Doves eat almost exclusively seeds which make up 97% of their diet.ย  Rarely, do they eat snails or insects.ย  They often swallow grit such as sand or small gravel to assist with digestion.ย  These birds generally eat enough to fill their crops and fly away to digest while resting.

During courtship the male bird leads the female to potential nest sites and the female will choose one.ย  The male will gather materials for a bird nest and bring it to her.ย  The male will then stand on the females back and give it to her so she can weave it into the nest.ย  The nest is flimsy constructed, made of blades of grass, twigs and confer needles.ย  Most nests are in trees, but they can be found in shrubs or on the ground.

The female, almost always, lays two eggs.ย  The eggs are small and white.ย  Sometimes she will lay her eggs in the nest of another pair of doves.ย  Mourning Doves are devoted parents.ย  They rarely leave the nest unattended.ย  The male sits on the eggs from morning to afternoon, with the female taking over the rest of the day and night.ย

Incubation of the eggs takes approximately two weeks.ย  In warm areas, these birds may raise up to six broods in a season.ย  The mourning dove is monogamous and they form strong pair bonds.ย  Pairs typically reconvene in the same area in the next breeding season.ย  Sometimes they remain together for the entire winter.

Home Page > Internet > Bird Repellent Works Best And Invisible Bird Repellent Works Best And Invisible Edit Article | Posted: Feb 24, 2011 | ]]> There is nothing worse than having birds around your home that make messes on the patio or eat fruit from your fruit trees. Naturally, you don't want to kill them, you just want to have them gone. Finding the right bird repellent, especially one that will not be obvious, is sometimes difficult so it is important to explore all avenues to find something that is safe, legal and will accomplish what is needed.

The trick is finding something that is invisible. Many people are aware of things such as hanging aluminum strips in trees or other areas where they congregate or imitation owls, but this is very apparent. You do not want to invite people over for a bar-b-cue and have these strips flying fluttering in the air, if there is a wind, or just hanging limp. It is unattractive and distracts from the beauty of your backyard area. On the other hand you don't want birds hanging around looking for scraps of food to fall on the ground.

One suggestion, as a repellent, is a nearly invisible netting which can be used over openings where these pests can enter or nest. This is something that is often used where there are problems in vineyards and orchards. While not completely invisible, if used in a small area it can be painted and will blend in very well with the surroundings.

Another item that is on the market is a sonic repellent. This item can be programmed for any type of bird and holds a microchip that gives off cries of distress. Birds, hearing this sound, flee because they think there is danger.

There are eight bird calls with this device, so it can be programmed, to any particular kind, as needed. This particular item does not harm the birds, but just scares them off. While it is controllable as to time used, it must be remembered that the birds are not the only ones who can hear the sound.

One method that sounds interesting, if you can reach the places where the birds usually perch. Is a liquid product that can be painted or sprayed on. This particular item can be used on a porous or non-porous surface and a gallon can cover an entire rooftop.

Tests have been made and it has found that this product, which is biodegradable, repelled birds from nesting, loafing and roosting. It was used on roofs, interior and exterior walls, bridges, sidings and the actual bird nests. Warning is given that it should be tested on a small area first as it might cause a stain on some materials unless they were sealed.

Searching the Internet is a good way to explore the various offerings regarding invisible bird repellent. At your leisure you can read all the pros and cons regarding each type offered and find something that will work in your particular situation. There is no reason, with the different repellents available in the market place, for anyone to have to put up with unsightly bird droppings and having fruit or other items damaged. Home Page > Home and Family > Pets > The Rose Breasted Grosbeak Bird The Rose Breasted Grosbeak Bird Edit Article | Posted: Jun 29, 2008 |Comments: 1 | Views: 588 | ]]> What a surprise to have two male Rose-Breasted Grosbeak birds on our bird feeder in the month of May. Then to our amazement we had three females appear! These birds are neo-tropical migrants. They spend the winter months in an area from central Mexico to northern South America. In May, they return to the North American continent and take up residence in the northeastern United States and southern Canada. Their habitat is shrubbery, woodlands, and brushy stream areas adjacent to open fields. The male birds arrive before the females, select a nesting territory, and begin singing to attract a prospective mate.

As well as, the sunflower seeds from our bird feeders, a typical diet for these beautiful birds might include seeds of elms, blossoms of hickory or beech trees, buds of white ash, flowers and fruit. Insects of the forest such as gypsy moths and tent caterpillars are also table fare for Grosbeaks. The Grosbeaks savor crop damaging beetles, locusts, cut worms, chinch bugs and other creepy crawlers. Because of this they are sometimes called the "potato bug bird".

The Rose Breasted Grosbeak is of the finch species. The male has a black head, back, bright red breast and white rump, sides and belly. The bird's wings are black with white patches above and red, white and black below. The bird in flight reveals startling pink-red linings on the wings. These birds have a large, stout, pale pink-almost white, conical bill. They have a long slightly notched black tail with white patches.

The female Grosbeak has a buff color breast with heavy brown streaks on the sides, making it seem almost drab compared to the male bird. The only "showy" part of the female is her yellow wing linings, only visible in flight. The male and female birds bear little resemblance to each other. Except for the bill, they can be easily mistaken for two different species. Both male and female birds are about the size of a starling.

The male bird is a proud and devout family man. He helps build the nest of twigs and grasses usually in a small tree or bush five to fifty feet high. The nest appears as a flimsy constructed saucer. He also takes his turn incubating the eggs. The female Grosbeak lays three to five light green eggs with brown spots. Incubation time for the eggs is thirteen to fourteen days. He sits on the nest from morning to afternoon, while the female gets the night shift. After hatching, the baby birds leave the nest in nine to twelve days. The male bird is so happy to be included in the family chores that he even sings while on the bird nest. Both the male and female birds sing; their songs very similar to a robin. Rose Breasted Grosbeaks often sing from the treetops in their loud, clear song. It is richer and a more melodious version of the lengthly sing-song of the robin. The notes are sweeter and they have more slurred whistles.

The Rose Breasted Grosbeak is a favorite bird in Mexico, Central and South America. Here the locals are fond of them and often capture them for pets.

We had not seen a Rose Breasted Grosbeak before and were so happy to have them come to our bird feeders. They have already moved on for their flight to the northeastern states. We hope when the late summer days start to become crisp, these beautiful birds will again visit our bird feeders on their way south for the winter.

The author became interested in birds because of her desire to overcome her bird phobia. Over time many interesting and beautiful birds have come to her yard, bird houses and bird feeders. Visit www.birdbedandbreakfast.com for bird houses, bird feeders and more.

Bird proofing government buildings, parks, military bases, and aircraft hangars has been a problem for quite some time.

At the dawn of aviation, the Wright brothers recorded a bird strike that interfered with their early flights. More recently, Hanscom Field in Bedford Massachusetts had roughly 5,000 starlings roosting in their hangar. Clinton Air Force Base in Oklahoma had six hangars with 200-300 house sparrows in each hangar. Lockbourne Air Base in Ohio had 2,000 to 3,000 house sparrows between three hangars with an additional 2,000-3,000 starlings. Wright-Patterson Field had pigeons in their propeller testing area. Selfridge Air Force Base in Michigan suffered from a sparrow invasion. The list goes on and on. Pest birds, it seems, love to hang out in hangers.

Birdsย entering various openings within aircraft hangars, roost in the I-beams high inside these structures. The Air Force says that theย accumulation of droppings, feathers, and other matter poses a big problem. Bird droppings, accumulating on the aluminum skin of airplanes, can corrode the metal and eventually weaken the structureย itself. Another concern is that if droppings, feathers, and other matter get into the engines, critically important parts must be cleaned as they could stall an engine during flight.ย Cleaning an aircraft engine is very expensive and time consuming.

So how does one bird proof these aviation areas? In the past, bird proofing aircraft and the facilities that housed and repaired them was a hit or miss proposition. Toxicants like strychnine-treated grain were used to inhumanely eliminate pest birdsโparticularly pigeons. Pellet guns were also used. As was high-pressure air or water to discourage roosting.

Today, bird-proofing methods vary from scaring devices, repellents and screening to mists and sonic systems. To bird proof large areas, bird netting creates an impenetrable barrier for most birds. Some heavy-duty bird netting is made of polyethylene fabric and is UV stabilized, flame resistant and rot and waterproof. Netting comes in various mesh sizes to deter a wide range of birds. To seal out small openings, there's copper mesh cloth. Availableย  in rolls, it's easily stuffed into cracks or holes to let air circulate but keep birds out.

Ideal for hangers, bird-misting systems are both humane and effective. These bird proofing systems work by releasing an ultra fine mist that pest birds can't see and prefer not to be around. The mist typically employs a chemical called methyl anthranilate, a grape extract that naturally occurs in concord grapes. The extract has been widely used for decades to deter a wide variety of pest birds including, sparrows, pigeons, starlings, crows, blackbirds and geese.ย  Yet it's safe for people, pets, plants and birds.

Another useful bird proofing method is the electric-track bird repeller. Ideal for ledges, rooftops, and flat or curved surfaces, these low-profile electrified tracks deliver a non-lethal electric shock that discourages birds from landing or feeding. Some manufacturers offer a flow-through design to keep water from damming up on rooftops and other surfaces.

Bird proofing measures--bird netting, bird repellents, bird spikes and electric shock systems--can be found on our nation's Capitol and White House, as well as on major civil and military facilities worldwide. Bird spikes are ideal for pigeons and other large birds. Some bird spikes are made of strong, rigid unbreakable polycarbonate, others have stainless steel spikes. A cousin to the bird spike is the bird spider. The spider arms wave with the breeze, keeping wild birds from landing. Most come in a variety of diameters and install easily. And although they appear menacing, spikes and spiders won't harm birds.

Many government buildings tend to be older with established pest bird populations. Failure to bird proof these buildings and offices can lead to a number of problems. The acid secretion produced by the fungi that live in bird droppings can discolor paint and other surfaces. Pest bird nests and droppings can get sucked into ducts, grilles and vents, blocking air conditioning and heating units. In these tough times with governments under the budget knife, cleaning and restoring buildings damaged by pest birds is one expense many governments can do without.

The bird slope is a simple solution ideal for many government buildings. Suitable for eaves, ledges, beams and other 90-degree areas where pest birds tend to nest and roost, the angled, slippery PVC panels cause pest birds to simply slide off when they try to land. For an even easier-to-install solution, there's bird gel. Birds hate this stuff because it creates a sticky surface that birds find very annoying to land in. It's safe for birds (except swallows) and a great way to keep birds from landing on ledges, I-beams, parapet walls, conduit, pipes, and most flat or curved surfaces.

At public parks, benches, playground equipment, statues, entry monuments and other structures can be rendered unsightly and eventually ruined by pest birds. There's also the health hazard pest birds pose to park visitors. Children placing their hands on bird droppings left on park bench armrests or playground equipment can be at risk, since many fail to wash their hands before snacking at the park. These droppings have been known to carry and transmit any of 60 known diseases. Sparrows and Feral Pigeons can carry bacteria causing Salmonellosis. Feral Pigeons carry Ornithosis--similar to viral pneumonia. If that's not bad enough, birds, bird droppings and their nesting fodder contain insects and mites, which can cause even more damage.

One effective and inexpensive way to bird proof parks is through the use of visual deterrents. Iridescent reflective foil or flash tape can be easily strung around lampposts and turned into pennants. Inflatable balloons are another economical visual scare device. Their lifelike reflective predator eyes and markings drive birds away by creating an โOptical Distraction Zone.โ

Keep our country beautiful and safe, and do it humanely by bird proofing.
