Adding bird nesting boxes to the garden can create safe and secure places where a variety of beneficial birds can raise their families. By encouraging an assortment of primarily carnivorous birds to the garden, the gardener can reduce their dependency on less environmentally friendly forms of insect control while still being able to enjoy the bounty from their garden. In addition, attracting birds to the garden has the added benefit of providing hours of educational entertainment for the gardener as they watch the busy and industrious parent birds raise their young.
By encouraging insect-eating birds, such as wrens, sparrows, and nuthatches to the garden, the gardener can be assured of active assistance in insect control. A hungry bird can consume many times its own weight in bugs and insects and if that bird is, in addition, feeding a nest of hungry babies, the greater the effect will be on the insect population. Many of these birds not only eat flying insects but others, such as caterpillars, grasshoppers, and ants, as well.
The type of nesting box depends on the type or types of birds the gardener wishes to welcome to their garden. Care should be given that the right nesting box with the appropriate size entry hole be provided for the specific bird so as to prevent access to the nest by larger birds or other predators. For instance, a nesting box for a blue tit should have an entry hole no larger than 25 mm across; a nesting box for a house sparrow should be no larger than 32 mm across.
Placement of the bird boxesย is another important factor. Care should be made not to place them where they will be exposed to wind, rain, or direct sunlight. The box's distance from the ground is also important and it should be high enough to discourage intrusion by predators. If possible, the gardener should try to recreate the natural habitat of the birds they wish to attract.
Bird boxes are readily available for purchase in stores or on-line. They can also, with a little woodworking know-how and the proper tools, be constructed at home. Plans with specific measurements and lists of required materials are available on-line and in books.
