Description
The adult Bald Eagle is evenly brown with a white head and tail. The tail is moderately long and slightly wedge-shaped. Males and females are identical in color. The beak, feet, and eyes are bright yellow. The legs are feather-free, and the toes are short and powerful with large talons.
The plumage of the immature is brown, speckled with white until the fifth year, when it reaches sexual maturity.
The Bald Eagle is a large bird, with a body 28รขยย40 inches, a wingspan of 66 in to 96 in and weight of 5.5รขยย15 lbs. Females are about 25 percent larger than males, adult females averaging 13 lb. and males averaging 9.0 lb.
The average life span of Bald Eagles in the wild is around 20 years.

Habitat and Range
The Bald Eagle prefers habitats near seacoasts, rivers, large lakes, oceans, and other large bodies of open water with an abundance of fish.
The Bald Eagle is extremely sensitive to human activity, and is found most commonly in areas free of human disturbance.
The Bald Eagle's natural range covers most of North America, including most of Canada, all of the continental United States, and northern Mexico.

Diet and Behavior
The Bald Eagle is a powerful flier, and soars on thermal currents. It reaches speeds of 35รขยย43 mph when gliding and flapping, and about 30 mph) while carrying fish. Its dive speed is between 75รขยย99 mph though it seldom dives vertically.
The Bald Eagle's diet is opportunistic but most feed mainly on fish. In the Pacific Northwest, spawning trout and salmon provide most of the diet.
To hunt fish, their most important live prey, the eagle swoops down over the water and snatches the fish out of the water with its talons. They eat by holding the fish in one claw and tearing the flesh with the other.
When competing for food, eagles will usually dominate other fish-eaters and scavengers, aggressively displacing mammals such as coyotes and foxes, and other birds or raptors.

Reproduction
Bald Eagles are sexually mature at four or five years of age. When they are old enough to breed, they often return to the area where they were born. It is thought that Bald Eagles mate for life.
Bald Eagle courtship involves elaborate calls and flight displays.
The eggs average about 2.9 in long by2.2 in.

Population
It is estimated that in the early 18th century, the bald eagle population was 300,000รขยย500,000, but by the 1950s there were only 412 nesting pairs in the 48 contiguous states of the US.
The Bald Eagle was declared an endangered species in the U.S. in 1967
With regulations in place and DDT banned, the eagle population has rebounded. The Bald Eagle can be found in growing concentrations throughout the United States and Canada, particularly near large bodies of water. In the early 1980s, the estimated total population was 100,000 individuals, with 110,000รขยย115,000 by 1992.รย The U.S. state with the largest resident population is Alaska, with about 40,000รขยย50,000.
It was removed from the United States federal government's list of endangered species in 1995, by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. When it was reclassified from Endangered to Threatened.
It was de-listed on June 28, 2007.

National Symbol
The Bald Eagle is the national bird of the United States of America. It appears on most of its official seals, including the Seal of the President of the United States. The Continental Congress adopted the current design for the Great Seal of the United States including a Bald Eagle grasping thirteen arrows and a thirteen-leaf olive branch with its talons on June 20, 1782.

Native American Culture
The Bald Eagle is a sacred bird in some North American cultures, and its feathers, like those of the Golden Eagle, are central to many religious and spiritual customs among Native Americans. Eagles are considered spiritual messengers between gods and humans.
Current eagle feather law stipulates that only individuals of certifiable Native American ancestry enrolled in a federally recognized tribe are legally authorized to obtain Bald or Golden Eagle feathers for religious or spiritual use.

Observation
The Bald Eagle is migratory, so you do not have to travel far to see one. You do need to make yourself aware of their seasonal migration and habits.
Many times a local news broad cast will have a story or the local paper an article.
One of the best ways to observe the bald Eagle is with a pair of binoculars or a spotting scope. Most places where the birds nest are closed off by local government so they can breed, hence you can not get up close and personal.
(you would scare them away any way). I know, in our state most hiking trails are closed when they are nesting.
A good tripod will steady the spotting scope and keep it focused while it roosts
Binoculars will let you track it across the sky Binoculars with a stabilizing feature will give you a more clear image.

Take the time to go observe. Even if you are not much of an outdoor person the birds of prey will still give you a thrill.

Before you start building chicken coops you need to analyse your surroundings and needs. Do you want a permanent fixture or a moveable coop? Will the chickens spend all their time in the coop, have a run or be allowed to wonder around unpenned?

Area

The main factor that will determine the size of chicken coop you need is the number of chickens you keep. It is always a safe bet to make the coop slightly larger than you need it for future breeding. If your building chicken coops with an outdoor run you should give the birds about three square feet each in the coops with four square feet in the run, or as much as your space allows as bigger space mean happier and less aggressive chickens. Chickens will not like to wonder onto snowy surfaces so if your birds will be penned in throughout the winter make sure they have between five and ten square feet. Chicken that will be in an ark without outdoor access need to have at least 5 square feet each.

Features

There are thousands of options when building chicken coops. Chicken coops range from small box like coops to large scale multi-storey coops housing over twenty birds. The options seem endless which can give you a headache when choosing your design.

In building chicken coops in urban areas you will need a design that it secure, the last thing you want is your birds escaping into next door's garden. In urban areas you may also be more concerned about how attractive the coop is.

Most people keep chickens to produce eggs. In this case you will have to have four or five nest boxes per hen in your coop. Chickens that are laying need to roost, roosts should be a couple of feet off the ground with about a foot of space per bird. Nesting boxes should also be a few feet off the ground and should be at least one square foot. Communal nesting boxes should feature at least one a foot opening in every twenty square foot of space.

Roosts can easily be made by attaching ladders or branches against the walls of the coop. Nesting boxes can easily be made from recycling household objects.

A good ventilation system is essential, carbon monoxide and gases from the birds waste can soon build up. Bear in mind that chickens like shade so position your coops correctly and include shady spots in you plans. Dust baths can be included in the plans or you can use the natural ground around the coop.

This is just a handful of the design features you need to consider when building chicken coops. Check out Building Chicken Coops HQ dot com for more Info.

Controlling Pest Birds with Bird Spikes

By: Fran Prisco

The name bird spikes conjures up notions of barbarians with studded weapons used against defenseless little birds, but that is just not true.ย Bird control spikes, also known as needle spikes or anti-roosting spikes are devices consisting of long, needle-like spikes used to control pest birds.ย The needles or spikes are usually all plastic or a plastic base with stainless steel spikes.ย They are harmless to pest birds, the spikes are not sharp, but create an unsuitable landing area for the birds so they move on to a more hospitable site.ย Bird spikes are designed to keep pest pigeons and larger birds off of building ledges, signs, parapet walls and other flat surfaces that pest birds like to roost and nest on.

Every year millions of dollars are spent cleaning up after and repairing the damage caused by pest birds such as pigeons, sea gulls, crows and other urban birds. Not only are these problems unsightly; pest birds and their feces can spread 60 plus transmittable diseases. Safety, sanitation and health hazards caused by bird droppings can pose serious liability risks, and left untreated, can lead to accidents and lawsuits. Bird feces, bird nests and debris can also create a bad public image with tenants and patrons. Individuals, companies and government agencies are tired of cleaning up bird feces or repairing the damage that is caused by pest birds and their droppings. Instead they have decided to invest in a Bird Control Solution, which is often as simple as installing bird spikes.

Bird spikes are made in one-foot or two-foot lengths, with different widths.ย The widths of the spikes are usually 3โ, 5โ and 8โ.ย The width of the bird spike used is determined by the area to be covered.ย It is best if the entire surface area that birds are landing on is covered with bird spikes.ย Installation of bird spikes is often as easy as applying adhesive or screwing them down.ย Once installed bird spikes are virtually invisible, not taking away from architectural detail.ย If you look hard around any major city in the country, you will find bird spikes on building ledges, signs, light posts and other areas.ย

Bird spikes have been labeled as the โmost effective type of bird deterrentโ.ย They are also one of the most economical pest bird deterrents; requiring little to no maintenance once installed.ย Bird spikes made of rigid plastic and high-grade stainless steel can last over 10-years installed on a building and retain their effectiveness.ย Most are manufactured with U.V. protectors in the plastic so that sun and weather have little effect on the material.ย When purchasing bird spikes, be sure that they are constructed of rigid U.V. protected plastic like those available at Bird-B-Gone, Inc.

You'll Like the Bird Spike For Humanely Deterring Pest Birds

A highly effective and humane pest bird deterrent, the simple bird spike won't allow birds to land. Birds can't get their wings and feet around the threatening looking spikes, and they just move on to easier perches. Recommended by building contractors, architects, and municipalities, the blunted spikes won't harm birds or people.

Plastic bird spikes are also more economical than steel spikes.

Who would have thought that there will come a time when people will have to develop ways to control birds and consider them as pests? Birds are supposed to be adorable and important elements of the surroundings but if they are becoming a nuisance that could cause health risks and several other hazards, then there is a need for a bird control. Bird control would often help you have cleaner and safer surroundings. Birds are already considered as pests if they create disturbances on areas where they are not suppose to go. They can even be considered as threats on some situations.

There are many reasons why people would decide to have bird control on their areas. One reason would be public image. Birds' droppings can sometimes ruin commercial signage and advertisement boards. They can also destroy the business atmosphere of a certain building or location. Cleanliness is definitely the major concern if you want to have a good image for your business or property and bird droppings can actually create a disgusting and annoying environment. The most serious trouble that they can give to your property or investments is when their droppings would cause some damage to your roof, outdoor gadgets, and air conditioning units. But it is not as simple as killing these birds because you also have to respect nature. Therefore, it is necessary to have bird control techniques in the forms of bird deterrent, bird netting, bird spikes or bird traps. These techniques could be the most humane options since they are not designed to kill but just to drive away birds that are out of control.

We all heard about news on health conditions caused by birds such as bird flu, Cryptococcosis and other health hazards. Bird nesting, droppings and wastes can cause viruses and bacteria to develop. This is already a serious reason why bird control is needed. And what about problems brought by birds on aircrafts which caused many deaths and loses? Bird deterrents can help reduce the risks for these kinds of health hazards and accidents.

Bird control can be done in accordance to health and safety regulations without violating the rights for animals. Bird deterrents, bird netting, bird spikes, or bird traps can be used to drive away birds and prevent them from scattering their wastes and droppings. For instance, you can use bird netting to repel birds from your rooftops or your air conditioning unit. Bird spikes on the other hand are used to threaten birds so that they will not land on areas where dangerous looking spikes are set up. Bird traps are used to contain birds and capture them for the purposes of transferring them to more appropriate areas where there are trees. They can then be free to build their nests and scatter their droppings without disturbing anyone.

Bird control is necessary to promote cleanliness, health, and most of all safety for everyone. This is one way of creating balance between the elements of nature and the modern surroundings of man.

If you own or manage a supermarket, you know what attracts shoppers: Sales, Super Bowl and Holidays. But if your supermarket is like most in the country, it also attracts pest birds. And if you've learned anything as a supermarket owner/operator, you know that birds are on their way right now to settle in on the signage and rooftops of your market.

ย

Problem: Pest birds can give you a ton of headaches. Their droppings can mar your sales signs and banners (all those expensive banners you plan to put up for summer). The droppings can also stain painted surfaces--like stucco, wood or steel. And roofs are practically an open invitation to bird nests. That's because almost every supermarket has food filled trash containers in the back as well as the front of the store. And most times, these containers are overflowing with snacks pest birds find irresistible.

ย

As you may have learned from bitter past experience, bird droppings and nesting materials can clog drainage spouts and gutters, leading to all sorts of expensive roof repairs. Water left to gather on a flat supermarket roof can leak and eventually collapse roof sections. Imagine the repair bill.ย But even if the roof holds up, water damage can seep into the subroof and create puddles in the store. Dripping water can damage expensive refrigeration units and heating systems. It can also short out wiring for lighting and security cameras.

Then there's the slip-and-fall danger bird droppings create when allowed to gather on store walkways and entrances. One unfortunate fall can result in expensive and time-consuming litigation. Consider too, the image of a store whose windows and doorways are covered with bird droppings. Even bird droppings on your shopping carts outside can be a real turn off for customers.

ย

Solution: There's really no getting around that fact that you have to implement some type of bird control measure. The only question that remains is what's best for your store. If past results are any guide and peers are asked about their choice, it all comes down to Bird Spikes, one of the most effective bird control measures on the market today.

ย

Properly installed on roof ledges, parapet walls and rain gutters, bird spikes do the job nicely. Pest birds just can't negotiate a landing on or near a bird spike. And they work equally well for most of the large birds found around supermarketsโincluding pigeons, crows and seagulls.

ย

Depending on your budget and the climate in your area, you have two basic options when it comes to Bird Spikes: Stainless steel spikes, which come in 3-, 5- and 8-inch widths; the less expensive plastic spikes, which come in 3-, 5- and 7-inch widths. The other thing about bird spikes is that they are easily installed using glue, nails or screws.

ย

The spikes are blunted at the tips so they won't harm birds or maintenance crews. They have been approved by the U.S. Humane Society and PICAS (Pigeon Control Advisory Service).ย Using a humane pest bird deterrent offers an added advantage in that you won't have dead birds lying in front of your store (as you would if you used poisons or BB guns).

ย

If you're concerned about how bird spikes might look along the roofline of your store, consider that fact that they now come in white, tan, gray, black, brown, brick red and crystal clear. Spikes with a non-reflective metal finish are also available.

ย

Remember, the best solution for any pest bird problem is to plan ahead.ย That means you should be installing bird spikes now before they make their nests on the rooftops and signs of your store.
