Springtime is fast approaching, and pest birds will be looking for a place to roost and nest. Better hope they don't land on your property. If they do, you're in for some major headaches.ย  For once they've settled on your commercial building or warehouse, hello expensive cleanups and repairs and goodbye peace and quiet. Here 's just one problem you'll be facing if pest birds get the upper hand--and one way you can prevent it.

Problem: When pest birds lay claim to your commercialย  property, they'll nest, eat and poop. This poop is not just unsightly, the acid produced by the fungi that live in bird droppings can corrode metal and erode stone. It can jam up windows, doors, rooftop ventilators and skylights. Bird droppings can also block out those skylights. And it can render security cameras inoperative.ย  In fact, if allowed to collect, bird droppings can damage expensive A.C. units (you know how costly they are).

ย

To keep up with birds and their droppings, you'll have to hire expensive cleaning crews. Bird nests and droppings can also clog gutters and down pipes, causing rooftops to overflow with water. Some roof sections have actually collapsed due to bird damage.

ย

Bird droppings are also unhealthy. They can carry any of 60 known diseasesโlike salmonellosis. This makes pest birds particularly hazardous in areas where food is stored, processed or served.ย  Finally, bird droppings on walkways and entryways to a commercial building can create serious slip-and-fall hazards. Wet bird poop can be as slippery as a banana peel.

Solution: One popular and highly effective way to get rid of birds is the Bird Slope. Ideal for use on open ledges that meet at a 90-degree angle, pest birds simply slide off these angled, slippery PVC panels whenever they attempt a landing. They are easy to install on eaves, ledges, beams and similar areas frequented by birds. And they are equally effective against all types of birds.

ย

Bird slope typically comes in 4-foot long sections andย  is sold 48 feet per box. The panels are easily screwed, glued or nailed to most any flat surface. The best bird slope features a "snap on" extender, which makes it easy to adapt to ledges as wide as 10 inches. (The basic bird slope, without an extenderย  can protect a 6-inch wide ledge.) You can also get mounting clipsย  to install the slopes vertically on the sides of buildings. Some slopes even come with "end caps" to keep birds from getting behind the slope. To blend in better with its surroundings, bird slope is now available in two colors--stone and grey. Try to get slope panels that are made of U.V.-protected PVC. These will be more resistant to extra sun and harsh weather. And if you're installingย  bird slope next to electrical wiring , opt for non-conductive panels. The base of your typical bird slope is 2โ3/4-inches wide, which makes the panel easy to glue down with an outdoor polyurethane adhesive.

ย

Remember: The time to install bird slope is nowโbefore pest birds arrive and stake a claim to your property.
