After many months of preparation 40145 was started up for the first time in preservation on 19th April 1984 at the ELR just outside Bolton Street tunnel at Castlecroft. Quite a crowd turned out for the event, some can be heard in the background! After initially failing to start, all 16 cylinders were de-compressed and the engine was spun over to get fuel up to the rails and injectors. On the next attempt 145 splutters into life emitting water, birds nests etc from all 4 exhausts, eventually firing on all 16 cylinders and whistling like a good un! A number of tests were done including speeding the engine. One of the de-compressor copper gaskets was leaking and can be heard in the background as a chuffing sound. This was sorted for the second startup a while later on part 2 of this video.
