With record-breaking heat waves baking much of the country, it seems like an odd time to be thinking about your furnace or it's chimney, but this is the best season to get your furnace chimney checked by a qualified chimney sweep or furnace maintenance company. Failing to do so could cause carbon monoxide poisoning problems in a few short months when the weather turns chilly again.

Why is that?

In the spring many creatures large and small make their homes in fireplace and furnace flues, to nest or have their young in the relative comfort of the cool, quiet, and dark "cave" that is open on the roofs of many homes across the country. These creatures like birds, squirrels, raccoons and bats can bring a mess of nesting materials with them, or create a mess of droppings left behind, potentially clogging the chimney either at the top (with a bird nest) or at the bottom (near the thimble where your furnace connects).

What happens during the summer is that the young have grown, left the chimney, and left behind a potentially deadly situation for the people living in the home.

That nesting material, along with any other mess left behind, can reduce the ability of your chimney to exhaust the deadly carbon monoxide fumes generated from your furnace or non-electric water-heater. (Hint: If your furnace or water-heater uses fuel like natural gas, propane, or oil - then it creates carbon monoxide.)

If the chimney flue is partially blocked, then the odorless but dangerous carbon monoxide can escape into the home. In the worst-cases, the mess left behind may actually block the chimney completely, causing all of the carbon monoxide to dump into the home, possibly building to concentrations high enough to cause death.

So what to do?

The best advice is to call a qualified chimney sweep or furnace technician to check your chimney and clear it of any obstructions that may be there. Summer time is typically "slow season" for most professional chimney sweeps, and some offer discounts or more flexible scheduling this time of year. If there are any repairs needed to your chimney, you'll have plenty of time to get those done before the colder weather rolls in.

Averting Tragedy

Every fall, with the night of the first cold snap you'll hear news of another family that has one or more of it's family members die in their sleep from carbon monoxide poisoning.ย The real tragedy is that all of these deaths can be prevented if the family had the chimney checked and/or installed carbon monoxide detectors near the sleeping and living areas within the house. Summer is also a great time to install a few carbon monoxide detectors in your home.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs recommend a carbon monoxide detector on every floor of your home, including the basement. A detector should be located within 10 feet of each bedroom door and there should be one near or over any attached garage. Each detector should be replaced every five to six years.

So take some time out from the sunshine, and get your chimney check-up, replace the batteries in your fire alarms, and outfit your home with a few carbon monoxide detectors as inexpensive insurance against a senseless tragedy.

Controlling Pest Birds with Bird Spikes

By: Fran Prisco

The name bird spikes conjures up notions of barbarians with studded weapons used against defenseless little birds, but that is just not true.ย Bird control spikes, also known as needle spikes or anti-roosting spikes are devices consisting of long, needle-like spikes used to control pest birds.ย The needles or spikes are usually all plastic or a plastic base with stainless steel spikes.ย They are harmless to pest birds, the spikes are not sharp, but create an unsuitable landing area for the birds so they move on to a more hospitable site.ย Bird spikes are designed to keep pest pigeons and larger birds off of building ledges, signs, parapet walls and other flat surfaces that pest birds like to roost and nest on.

Every year millions of dollars are spent cleaning up after and repairing the damage caused by pest birds such as pigeons, sea gulls, crows and other urban birds. Not only are these problems unsightly; pest birds and their feces can spread 60 plus transmittable diseases. Safety, sanitation and health hazards caused by bird droppings can pose serious liability risks, and left untreated, can lead to accidents and lawsuits. Bird feces, bird nests and debris can also create a bad public image with tenants and patrons. Individuals, companies and government agencies are tired of cleaning up bird feces or repairing the damage that is caused by pest birds and their droppings. Instead they have decided to invest in a Bird Control Solution, which is often as simple as installing bird spikes.

Bird spikes are made in one-foot or two-foot lengths, with different widths.ย The widths of the spikes are usually 3โ, 5โ and 8โ.ย The width of the bird spike used is determined by the area to be covered.ย It is best if the entire surface area that birds are landing on is covered with bird spikes.ย Installation of bird spikes is often as easy as applying adhesive or screwing them down.ย Once installed bird spikes are virtually invisible, not taking away from architectural detail.ย If you look hard around any major city in the country, you will find bird spikes on building ledges, signs, light posts and other areas.ย

Bird spikes have been labeled as the โmost effective type of bird deterrentโ.ย They are also one of the most economical pest bird deterrents; requiring little to no maintenance once installed.ย Bird spikes made of rigid plastic and high-grade stainless steel can last over 10-years installed on a building and retain their effectiveness.ย Most are manufactured with U.V. protectors in the plastic so that sun and weather have little effect on the material.ย When purchasing bird spikes, be sure that they are constructed of rigid U.V. protected plastic like those available at Bird-B-Gone, Inc.

How To Use And Install Plastic Bird Spikes

Plastic bird spikes are an effective pest bird-proofing tool for many property owners across the country and around the world. What makes them so effective is that, no matter how they try, large pest birds just can't seem to get their wings or feet around them to land. After a few tries, birds just give up and move on. Plastic bird spikes are also more economical than steel spikes.

One of the best values in bird proofing today is the Plastic Bird Spike. These clever devices deny birds a suitable landing zone. Birds can be considered a pest when they decide to roost or nest in areas where their feces and debris can be considered a hazard.ย Each year building owners and homeowners spend countless hours and money cleaning up after and repairing the damage caused by pest birds. Instead they have decided to invest in a Bird Control Solution, which is often as simple as installing bird netting.

Bird netting is used to exclude pest birds from areas such as rooftops, warehouses, airline hangars, overhangs, eaves of homes and other enclosed areas that pest birds are to be kept out of.ย Netting will provide 100% exclusion of pest birds and is a long-term bird control solution.ย Bird netting comes in several different mesh sizes ranging from ยพโ mesh for use with all types of birds, to 2โ mesh to use when larger birds like pest pigeons and seagulls are a problem.ย Netting comes in several colors as well; white, stone and black.ย Black bird netting is usually preferred because of its natural U.V. protection and lack of discoloration due to dirt and dust.ย When installed properly, the netting will be virtually invisible, not interfering with the architectural features of a building.

Choosing the right bird netting:

There are several types of bird netting available.ย There is knotted polyethylene netting that is considered long lasting and heavy duty.ย You would use this type of netting where you want a permanent solution to your bird control issues.ย Heavy-duty bird netting is usually manufactured using U.V. treated twine providing long life.ย Strength of these nets can be greater than 40 lbs. burst.ย The nets will also have a high melting point and flame resistant.ย Heavy-duty bird netting is ideal for use in warehouses, airplane hangars, canopies, overhangs and other large areas where pest birds are to be excluded.

Another type of bird netting is Polypropylene extruded plastic netting.ย This is a strong plastic bird netting used to exclude pest birds from homes and gardens. ย It is strong yet lightweight, easy to use and install.ย Plastic bird netting is often used to protect crops and orchards from pest birds.ย It is ideal to protect blueberries, fruit trees and other garden plants.ย Hanging plastic bird netting from the eaves of your home can protect it from such pest birds as swallows and woodpeckers. Plastic bird netting is not a long term netting product with about one year of usage.

Bird netting comes in different mesh sizes.ย Choosing the correct mesh size is important. ย You do not want the birds to be able to get into the netted off area and become stuck or trapped.ย For larger birds such as pigeons and seagulls you can use a 1-1/8โ to 2โ mesh size.ย For smaller birds such as sparrows and starlings use a ยพโ to ยฝโ mesh size.ย When using plastic netting to protect berries and grapes, use a ยผโ mesh size.ย

Installing bird netting:

Commercial installations for bird netting can get complicated depending on the size of the area to be protected and the material that the netting will be attached to.ย Netting off the infrastructure of an airplane hangar can require thousands of square feet of netting and special equipment such as lifts and power equipment to install the net.ย It is often recommended to use a professional bird control installer to get the job done correctly.ย There are bird control installers throughout the country that have experience in installing bird netting in large quantities and complicated jobs.

Installations of bird netting on your home or in your garden can easily be done yourself.ย For use in the garden you will cover your favorite plants with the plastic bird netting.ย Draping the ยผโ mesh plastic bird netting over fruit trees will protect the fruit from pest birds.ย It may be necessary to hire a professional to hang the netting from the eaves of our home, especially in multi-storied houses.ย

For more information on bird netting and to find a professional bird net installer in your area contact Bird-B-Gone, Inc. at -800-392-6915 or visit www.birdbgone.com.

Even though the name suggests it, fishing float tubes are not just for fishing. As a matter of fact, there are so many different ways to use a fishing float tube that you could use it on the water every summer weekend without ever bringing along your fishing gear. Here are just a few of the different ways they can be used:

Fun and Games

When friends and family bring along their fishing float tubes, a creative mixture of spontaneous games can happen. Play "bumper floats" or a floating version of Marco Polo. Tie float tubes together in a circle and play a game of catch or keep away. Race float tubes using only the power of swim fins. The options are limited only by your imagination.

Sun Worship

A fishing float tube can become an island for one on which you sit back and soak up the warm rays of the sun. A portable music player, an engaging book, cold drinks, and plenty of sunscreen are all that's needed to enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the water.

Star Gazing

Bring a flashlight, a life vest, and a healthy dose of bug repellant with you when you take your fishing float tube on the water for a night of star gazing. It will be worth the effort because, when the sky is clear, the view from a remote pond or lake will fill you with awe. Stars upon stars upon stars create a glimmering blanket of light above. Be prepared with a wish or two for the shooting stars that are sure to cross the sky in your presence.

Photo Opportunities

Fishing float tubes give photographers a one-of-a-kind vantage point for capturing natural scenery. Use a water tight container to store cameras and photography gear while on the water.

Bird Watching

You try to be quiet, but walking through the woods to reach a remote bird nesting spot means stepping on leaves that crunch and sticks that crack. It's too easy to frighten away the very creature you wish to observe. Moving toward a nesting site near the water's edge while in a fishing float tube gives you the pleasure of coming within reach without disturbing the birds. These inflatable watercraft allow bird watchers the benefit of using the quiet of the water to get closer than otherwise possible to birds of all kind who flock to shorelines and nearby wooded areas for food and rest.

By thinking creatively, many more alternative uses for fishing float tubes can be discovered. Naturally, they can be used for fishing, too. They're perfect, in fact, for finding less-traveled fishing spots that are away from highly-fished areas easily accessible by foot. No matter how you choose to use a fishing float tube, though, you can be sure that a good time is ahead of you.
