If you are a bird watcher, then it should be easy for you to recognize a Northern Cardinal bird as it perches somewhere in your garden. The cardinal got its name from the Catholic Church Cardinals because its feathers are nearly the same shade as the cardinal's robe. This bird is very popular in the United States. St. Louis Cardinals, one of major league baseball teams, uses the bird as its mascot. Furthermore, the cardinal has been named as the state bird in seven states. Since this bird is very popular, it is not surprising to find out that many people are interested to place a cardinal bird house in their garden.
Finding the perfect location to place your cardinal bird house
If you decide to place a cardinal bird house in your garden, there are several factors that you need to consider. First, you need to find a spot where cardinals will feel comfortable to nest it. In this case, you should know the characteristics of this bird. The cardinals are forest dwelling birds. They prefer a spot with some trees around. Moreover, the area should also have dense vegetation so the birds can search for food and hide from predators. A spot with some trees and brambly underbrush should be suitable for the cardinals.
The second thing to remember is that you should never place a cardinal bird house near your kitchen window, or any window in this case. Your activities inside the house generally will not disturb these birds. However, you should know that the male cardinals are aggressive during breeding season. Therefore, when a male cardinal sees its reflection in the window, it will think that there is another male cardinal. It will immediately launch an attack and the battle can last for a considerable period of time. In the end, the bird will be exhausted or injured. Therefore, you should content yourself to see the activities of the cardinal from afar. A pair of binoculars should serve your purpose.
How to attract cardinal birds
If your area has some trees and bushes that grow close together, it is likely that you have seen some cardinals flying around. Even if you have a suitable area, it does not mean that you do not need to do anything to attract the birds. Nesting cardinals need a water supply and thus you can provide a bird bath nearby to encourage the cardinals to stay around. Filling the bird feeder with seeds is a must if you want to attract the birds.
